Maryland Systema’s Role in Reducing Crime

Maryland Systema Highlights the Role of Awareness and Self-Defense Training in Community Safety

Rockville, MD — March 25, 2023 — Maryland Systema is encouraging adults to take a broader view of personal safety by developing awareness, boundary-setting, movement, and responsible decision-making before physical contact becomes necessary.

Self-defense training cannot prevent every crime or guarantee personal safety. It can, however, give adults structured opportunities to recognize developing problems, protect their personal space, manage distance, and make clearer decisions when conditions become uncertain.

Self-Defense Begins Before Physical Contact

Many potentially dangerous encounters develop gradually. Someone may move too close, ignore a boundary, block a path, conceal their hands, or continue following after being asked to stop.

Maryland Systema teaches students to notice changes in behavior, posture, distance, movement, tone, and access to exits. Students also examine how distraction, fatigue, anger, embarrassment, and social pressure can affect judgment.

Recognizing these factors earlier may create opportunities to:

  • Change position before movement becomes restricted
  • Communicate a clear boundary
  • Create distance
  • Move toward other people or a safer location
  • Use an obstacle or barrier
  • Contact security personnel or emergency services
  • Leave before physical action becomes necessary

“Self-defense should not begin with the assumption that a fight is unavoidable,” said Jim Eglin, founder and Chief Instructor of Maryland Systema. “Training should help people recognize when a situation is changing and act while they still have space and choices.”

Physical Skills With Responsibility

Maryland Systema also teaches responses to strikes, grabs, pushing, pulling, restraint, ground situations, weapons, and multiple people.

The purpose of this training is not to encourage confrontation. Students learn to protect their balance, maintain mobility, create an opportunity to disengage, and use only the level of force required by the immediate danger.

Training also emphasizes stopping when the need for physical action ends.

Physical ability without judgment can increase risk. For that reason, Maryland Systema connects movement and contact training with awareness, avoidance, de-escalation, protection of others, and responsible use of force.

Controlled Training for Uncertain Situations

Self-defense problems rarely happen in one predictable way. Distance changes, people resist, footing becomes uncertain, and other individuals may enter the situation.

Maryland Systema uses controlled partner work and progressive resistance to help students examine how they respond when pressure increases. Beginners start with manageable exercises before changes in speed, direction, resistance, and uncertainty are introduced.

Students may discover that they hold their breath, become rigid, stare at one point, move too late, or rely on strength before understanding the problem.

Training makes these habits visible so students can improve their breathing, balance, movement, awareness, and decisions.

A Realistic View of Community Safety

Maryland Systema does not claim that martial arts training alone can reduce community crime rates. Crime is influenced by many social, economic, environmental, and institutional factors.

Self-defense education is one limited part of a broader approach to community safety. Its most realistic contribution is helping individual participants become more attentive to their surroundings, more willing to establish boundaries, and better prepared to seek help or leave a developing problem.

Community safety also depends on responsible policing, accessible public services, safe transportation, effective lighting, supportive neighborhoods, and resources for people experiencing violence or instability.
