WHAT IS SYSTEMA?

Systema is a practical approach to self-defense built around natural movement, breathing, structure, awareness, and control under pressure. Instead of memorizing fixed responses, you learn how to adapt when distance, timing, balance, and conditions change.

Training helps you recognize tension, keep your body mobile, and make better decisions when a situation becomes uncertain or aggressive. You work with strikes, grabs, restraint, ground movement, multiple attackers, and common weapons, but the goal is not to collect techniques. The goal is to understand how your body reacts and how to remain functional.

Systema also places strong emphasis on avoiding trouble, managing distance, protecting your space, finding exits, and using only the force the situation requires. Breathing helps regulate tension and supports clear thinking. Movement helps you protect balance and avoid becoming trapped.

At Maryland Systema, adults train through controlled partner work that becomes more demanding as their skill improves. Beginners start at a manageable pace and do not need athletic ability or prior martial arts experience. You learn to move with less tension, recover when things go wrong, and respond with greater awareness, judgment, and control during real, changing encounters.

You will learn to notice changes in movement, distance, posture, and behavior while staying aware of your surroundings. Training helps you recognize possible threats earlier, read another person’s actions more clearly, and make faster, better-informed decisions before a situation becomes more dangerous.

Maryland Systema teaches practical self-defense based on awareness, movement, judgment, and control. You learn to recognize developing threats, create distance, use de-escalation when possible, and respond when physical action becomes necessary. Training emphasizes measured decisions, proportional responses, and the responsible use of force, helping you act according to the situation rather than fear, anger, or habit.

You will learn practical self-defense skills for common threats, including strikes, grabs, restraint, and weapons. Training teaches you to manage distance, protect your balance, stay mobile, and respond as conditions change. You will also learn to protect yourself and others with greater awareness, judgment, and control.

You will learn to use breathing to manage tension, maintain focus, and keep moving under stress. Training shows you how to regulate your breathing during physical contact, fatigue, discomfort, and uncertainty. This helps you remain calmer, more efficient, and better able to make clear decisions when pressure increases.

MEET FOUNDER & CHIEF INSTRUCTOR: JIM EGLIN

Jim Eglin founded Maryland Systema to provide adults with practical self-defense training that also supports movement, fitness, breathing, and overall physical health. He teaches group classes, workshops, and private lessons for students with a wide range of experience and ability.

Jim began training in Systema in 2013 and earned his Full Systema Instructor Certification in 2019 under Vladimir Vasiliev, Head Instructor at Systema HQ in Toronto. He renewed his certification in 2022 and 2024 in accordance with Systema HQ instructor requirements.

His broader training includes more than five years of Krav Maga through Krav Maga Worldwide, Krav Maga Global, and Krav OZ. He has also trained in Judo, Knight Jiu-Jitsu®, and Boxing with William Joppy, a three-time WBA middleweight champion.
